AlterKnit - New Zealand

About Jane

Jane is the creative design force behind Alterknit.

Growing up in New Zealand was a happy mix of country and city, tradition and innovation. School holidays were spent on family farms. I have fond memories of helping to birth lambs, shearing sheep then washing, carding and spinning the wool.

Together with one of my many Aunts, dye stuffs were collected including lichen pulled off farm fences, tea and onionskins to dye the wool after it had been spun. My Grandmother spent countless hours teaching a left handed Jane to knit, crochet and tat in front of winter fires. So began a deep connection with my craft.

Having travelled the world extensively spending months at a time in under-developed countries, my journeys have instilled a great appreciation for a world rich in traditional craft. I have been inspired by numerous talented artisans whose invaluable influence is incorporated in my very existence today.

Launching a collection of architecturally inspired designer knitwear in the late 80’s gave me a solid platform within the fashion industry. Subsequently, as a textile designer, I have lived and worked for international retail and wholesale brands in Europe, Asia, the USA and Australia.

I currently live in exciting Hong Kong with my husband and two daughters.
