AlterKnit Knit Kit

Our Philosophy

Alterknit is a true alternative to the world of instant gratification, polluting manufacturing and throwaway consumer goods.

We are committed to Fair Trade as the very core of our mission. Collaborating with fair trade businesses we help to give strength and freedom to women in developing countries by providing them with a sustainable income. We believe the most effective way for women to attain social and economic equality begins with economic independence through “good” employment. Thus, women are empowered to make decisions that affect both themselves and their children within the home and community.

Utilizing skills and knowledge passed down through generations, they hand-dye 100% Merino wool, hank by hank, with plant dyes resulting in minimal impact on the environment. Henna, indigo, cochineal, navajo tea, sappan wood, ebony seed – exotic elements from nature used for centuries as traditional dyes – produce inherently beautiful colours, naturally.

Each kit includes sufficient Natural Merino to make the largest size sweater, the pattern for sizes 2-3, 4-5 and 6-7 years, a pair of rosewood knitting needles and “My Time with Love” buttons where required. The underlying theme of the product is “Your time with love”. We feel time is one of our most precious commodities today and to give of ones time is the greatest gift of all. As such, we have added to the kit a “My Time with Love” sew-in label.

The packaging uses recycled paper and printing is done with environmentally friendly inks.

The kits are also assembled by hand thus ensuring the production and use of the final product creates as small of a carbon footprint as possible.

With the backing and support of you, the consumer, we can actively support small scale producers in poor communities. We can ensure that materials used in production and packing do not damage the environment.

Together we can, wherever possible, raise awareness about the need for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade, a need to put people and the environment first.

Alterknit embraces principles that promote honorable, moral and fair business.
